Weddings, then and now, are the most grotesque ceremonies in American life. Miserable expressions are rife at these hideous affairs. The other pictures of your ancestors jibe with observed in the pictures from my family albums going back to the turn of the century: that is, if you want to capture an American with a great big, genuine smile on his or her face, shoot them standing next to their new car. This is where our hearts really are.
