Pretty far into aging, but still graceful.  Lyons, NY.

About Fenster

Gainfully employed for thirty years, including as one of those high paid college administrators faculty complain about. Earned Ph.D. late in life and converted to the faculty side. Those damn administrators are ruining everything.

  1. Lovely collage. Is Lyons rundown and depressing? A slightly disheveled pleasure? I’m forever semi-making plans to move someplace cheap on lovely in central-western NYS …

Lyons sits right between rundown/depressing and slightly disheveled pleasure. More the former, and more’s the pity. Some nice old Victorians like this but no money to fix any of them up reasonably well. And a lot of the old housing stock is not quite as nice, and it is all shmushed together.

There are plenty of options, though, if you want to do that mental exercise about living options for real or just for fun. At the high end is a place like Pultneyville, which is Williamson-on-Lake-Ontario. Despite being a few miles from the hot c*nt ad, it is like a pristine New England village right on the lake. Expensive by upstate standards; cheap by others. A town like Canandaigua is a nice compromise. The lake properties are on the high side since it is on a Finger Lake, but the Victorians in the village are charming.

One of the great things about traditional architecture is that it looks okay even when a little over-aged, a little overgrown, and slightly unkept. Modern architecture, not so much.
