I’ve actually stopped frequenting some sites where I can no longer make comments. It would seem that they really don’t have enough self-confidence to allow free discourse.

Out of curiosity, are you referring to us? We have never allowed completely free discourse, just because we don’t want trollery, but as long as someone isn’t trollish, we are happy to welcome debate, and have engaged in much. First-time commenters always go into moderation, though, until approved, and that goes for people who comment initially under one identity, but then change to another; instant moderation till we re-allow them; happened just today with one long-time commenter, in fact…

So, the only reason anyone at our site who previously was able to make comments but now ‘no longer can make comments’ is usually of this variety, unless trollish behaviour was the reason for dropping someone into moderation. I have to say, haven’t seen any comments under your name ever at our blog, unless you went by something else before, there.

We use pretty much the same policy on commenting — old-timers go thru unchecked, first-timers go into moderation, spam and trolls straight to the trash can. Good idea, though, spelling it out. We should probably do that too.
