The Branagah version is so much better. I grew up in working class and attended the local high school. I had never studied Shakespeare. I still remember the first time heard the speech, my mouth was agape and was transfixed. It spoke to me and my idea of what it meant to be a man.

The No Nobis at the end, sublime.

I think the Olivier is more impressive as a piece of movie staging, but it’s also very brittle and perhaps too intellectualized; it shortchanges the emotional potential of the scene. The Branagh, on the other hand, is all emotion; it goes for your guts, and I think it ends up being more memorable. I really enjoy Branagh. He’s just dying to please you, like a big affable schoolboy or a happy waggy tail dog.
