There are opera directors with decades of experience who fail to understand this essential truth articulated by first-timer Christoph Waltz.

Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier, directed by the double-Oscar winner, is playing in Antwerp until 28 December, then moves to Ghent 9-19 January, before turning up at London’s Royal Opera, Covent Garden for a 2016 engagement featuring Renée Fleming.

    I saw Rosenkavalier at the Met last week. They had subs in for both Baron Ochs and Octavian, but it was pretty great.
