    Emmett Miller was a HUGE influence on country music, and hence, American music in general. Too bad minstrelsy is such a charged topic, so much great and influential stuff came from it. The proto-country and -rock music is so interesting and great. Not just the music but the figures involved and the ways they presented their acts. Check out the book Creating Country Music: Fabricating Authenticity. SO interesting. All that down-home, old timey authenticity people pine for and try to recapture was as much artifice and the most outlandish Bowie stuff. And that’s not a knock on it at all, in my opinion. I never tire of reading about artists reinventing themselves to create their art. Some great Dylan bits in that book too.
