Both songs have great verses (Petty’s singspiel is brilliant), but both fall apart at the chorus. The Pixies just repeat “Here comes your man” three times, with no impressive resolve. Petty’s “Here come my girl” chorus starts great, but dribbles off at the end. Both are hopelessly hookless.

Respectfully disagree with you. I think both songs are earworms in the best sense. Really too bad about Tom Petty. My wife and I saw him play here in Sacramento just a month ago, he and his band sounded fantastic. He played 2 1/2 hours of nothing but hit after hit. Kinda forgot how many great rock songs they guy wrote.
