I posted some photos of a Victorian again gracefully in Lyons, NY.
Actually, the photo didn’t do justice, and I mean to the deterioration, which is pretty far advanced when you see it in person. In truth, a lot of the Erie Canal towns are pretty tired. Which is a shame since there are some wonderful buildings, mostly going downhill.
Here are some more photos, over-romanticized and gauzified just a bit.
The two hot dog wagons, right on the Erie Canal, are just around the corner from one another. There is a market for hot dogs upstate.

Sigh: I do so love that part of the world … What do you say we get a few hundred of our closest friends and all move to Lyons? We’d turn it into something buzzy and special again.

Taking over a small town like that is a lot more financially feasible than New Urban from scratch and it would be a lot more inviting. It is just hard to figure the logistics and business side. Also for my money the town to take over is your old haunt Palmyra. The downtown has ugly signage here and there but is otherwise in splendid shape. Houses are not rock bottom cheap like Lyons but sheesh. And it is close to the cultured East Side of Rochester, Pittsford, Brighton, Finger Lakes. Palmyra isn’t really close to a tipping point but I could imagine it.
