Following Paleo Retiree’s post, this crossed my desk this morning:

Clearly an attempt to ape this:

Holy cow is that stupid! Let’s pretend keypads have never existed and make a new layout that is unfamiliar – and we’ll call it innovative! Let’s place the most used buttons, the numbers, farther apart and place the least used right in the center. Let’s make people throw away their muscle memory from familiar use of a standard key arrangement and make them start all over, just for us! Let’s bring back the rotary phone, but not make it work like one! All so it can ape something cool, because we’re so tired of the design of our calculators.

Boy does the design profession ever have a lot to answer for.

  2. Imagine if Apple went after all the companies that have aped their designs … I wonder how many lawsuits that’d come to. I wonder how often they’d win. I bet their lawyers are some of the best in the world.

Is it OK to confess that I sometimes feel a little nostalgic for rotary phones?

One advantage of the rotary phone is that the lag and effort prevented an occasional call that you really shouldn’t have been making in the first place.
