The Stanford study on the benefits of organic food has been all over the internet and tv today. What do you think about it?

(Here’s an L. A. Times article about it.)

How does a nitrate ion know whether it’s organic or not?

“Organic” doesn’t matter to me per se…but I’d rather eat/see/feel/think/hear things that were made by people’s hands than by machines & industrial processes. And in food that’s more what you’ll get with organic stuff. Our own fruit tress and vegetable garden are of course organic, that would be our main source…rarely buy organic except at farmer’s markets. It’s important to understand it’s a luxury item and not a solution to the planets problems too.

  3. I don’t care if it solves the planet’s problems (though I’d rather my dollars support organic-style farming than Monsanto-style), I just want to eat fewer pesticides. I remember once visiting a factory-style farm. The owner of the farm proudly showed me the petroleum-based fertlizer and the petroleum-based pesticide he used to grow the carrots in his otherwise styrofoam-like dirt. Didn’t make the carrot he then offered me seem very appetizing.

Not sure organic is really better for you on the pesticide thing:

For some stuff, organic seems to taste better.

God only knows. But that carrot the one farmer showed me wasn’t very appealing.
