Buchanan is almost entirely free of the reflexive spinning urge that is the way dominant tendency among pundits. I have watched the McLaughlin Group for many years, where he has long had a seat, and he can be astonishingly able to give credit to the other side, something that no one else seems able to do.

I don’t watch the political shows on TV, but from D.C. types I know I’ve learned that Buchanan’s always had a rep as being, for all his rightie crustiness, very easy to get along with and big-hearted where friends of all persuasions go. I like the way his opinions are arguments are informed by practical knowledge of politics too — he’s been there, he’s played the game, but he hasn’t become a total sellout or cynic. Too many political commentators radiate “wet behind the ears” to me. Can’t accuse Buchanan of that.

Yes, agree with him or not, Buchanan is always a breath of fresh air. While he’s generally on the Right, he doesn’t toe any party line, and thet’s refreshing. He has his blind spots (he has too much of a tendency to assume that whatever the Neocons hate must be Ok, when in fact this is not always the case – I mean Hamas ARE a bunch of psychopaths, some things are true even though AIPAC says them) but he’s streets ahead of most commentators. He also has a great affection for the white working class, and it’s hard to think of a less fashionable cause right now.

Thanks for the intro to Scott. I’ll take a look. Always a pleasure to read a libertarian who wonders whether entirely eliminating the state is such a great idea. Reason’s commenters are as ever fair, balanced and … well, honestly, I didn’t get through so many. Does Reason have a really young readership or something? Reason is a little on the callow, self-righteous side, but they seem smart enough. The vitriolic idiocy of their comments always surprises me.
