Quote Du Jour

Paleo Retiree writes:

Andrew Bacevich thinks he knows why so many establishment journos consider isolationism such a clear-and-present danger:

Warn about the revival of isolationism and your prospects of making the grade as a pundit or candidate for high office suddenly brighten.

Happy to embrace the “isolationist” label myself.

  1. “The end of World War II found the United States donning the mantle of global leadership … World peace did not ensue. Instead, a host of problems continued to afflict the planet, with isolationists time and again fingered as the culprits impeding their solution.”

I’ve read a lot of movie bios. It’s always fun to see how the authors deal with the question of isolationism, particularly where the America First movement is concerned. Usually, there’s a fair bit of tsk-tsk’ing. Sometimes the author just tries to get through that bit really quickly. Because if you didn’t support getting involved in WWII, you were obviously a Nazi.

Also funny to realize how many Hollywood types were isolationist, conservative, etc. I remember a Lillian Gish quote about her distaste for FDR (or was it Wilson?). Something like: “I didn’t like him because he cared about foreign people more than he cared about Americans.”

Reading the Joseph McBride Ford bio now. No problems there: Ford was a standard-issue lefty, albeit with some quirks.

    • Funny how some people think that minding your own business is an evil act. Bill Kauffman’s “America First!” is a pretty great rehabilitation of that group. An amazing number of respectable Americans were members, and hated the idea of getting involved in yet another European war.

  3. I’ve long believed that the U.S. needs to close down the foreign bases and bring the troops home. Has to be done incrementally and carefully. Roll back the military to a peacetime standing, too.
