Paleo Retiree writes:
Fred Reed thinks that boys should be taught by men.
Women are totalitarian. Men are happy to let boys be boys and girls be girls. Women want all children to be girls. In school this means emphasizing diligence—neat homework done on time, no matter how silly or academically vacuous—over performance, meaning material learned. Women favor docility, orderliness, cooperation in groups, not making waves, niceness and comity. For boys this is asphyxiating. If women wanted to start a bar for women only, men would not care. If men want a private club in which to enjoy male company, women go explode in fury. Totalitarian.
Maybe he’s onto something …
And he’s right.

It’s very possible that male teachers in schools for boys is a good thing. I’d be interested in reading a piece about that. But even though Reed is Outrageous On Purpose, he does nothing to convince me and everything to make me treat his thesis with kid gloves. He’s so extreme he leaves the impression that he’s simply lost contact with the planet.
The only thing I’ll grant him is that the 8th grade is way too late for school valentines. To me (a woman, after all) the rest isn’t worth arguing, as presented.

And yet, his views (at lleast the serious ones) were probably mainstream as recently as the mid-1960’s. It’s interesting how far we’ve moved without really noticing, isn’t it?

There is a sex difference in teaching style, but it’s dwarfed by other group differences, like ethnic group (Scots vs. Swedes) or time period (’80s vs. 2010s). Unfortunately we can’t travel back in time, so that difference is moot for policy. Ethnic discrimination within whites would probably be easier to sneak by the Powers That Be than sex discrimination.
Having a male from a namby-pamby group teach the kids isn’t worth that much anyway. A hillbilly woman would allow for more rambunctiousness than a man from the land of Minnesota Nice. Ditto their inclination toward corporal punishment.
