  1. Reminiscent of the Japanese woodblock printed sex manuals.

Everything old is new again, eh? Girl on girl, bald eagles, cunnilingus and facesitting, inter-racial (or inter-species — doing it with darkies, at any rate)… anything *but* procreative sex. White girls with big ol’ jungle booties, a century before J Lo, Beyonce, or Kim Kardashian.

In fact, the only thing that would be out of place in today’s decadent twilight culture is the big wild hair, but we’re still in a Victorian period, not yet Edwardian.

Those two periods saw the highest escalation of intra-elite status competition, conspicuous consumption, and so on, before it all blew up during WWI, the Russian Revolution, and the turbulent aftermath into the early ’20s (including a severe post-war depression).

That must be related to how non-procreative the erotic / pornographic culture was, and how it’s become over the past couple decades. Let’s us elite members have a status contest to see who can indulge in the weirdest, biologically pointless sex acts. Who will out-kink who? I think conspicuous leisure and consumption tie in somehow too, like we’re trying to signal how above-it-all we are by not having sex to make babies and raise large families — so mundane and profane. So breeder-esque.

Another uncanny parallel to contempo decadence — in 1904, Gerda married Einar Wegener, a man who later became the first post-op trans-sexual, Lili Elbe. Before and after pictures (all safe for work, thank God):
