NOT The Beatles

Fenster writes:

The Knickerbockers’ Lies doesn’t sound all too much like the Beatles to my current day ears, but when it came out in 1965 it had most people fooled.

You’re right! Faked us out then, but now the non-Beatley-ness of it is obvious. By the way, any of the several Knickerbockers’ “Greatest Hits” CDs out there is a worthwhile investment. They had a deep catalogue of excellent original songs, many as good as “Lies”. What kept them back was that every recording they ever did, even for years after, had exactly the same vocal and instrumental texture as “Lies” — right down to duplicating the strangled little scream going into the break. Truly unimaginative production. So the songs don’t sound different from one another at first. But after a few listens, it becomes clear that the Knickerbockers were real masters of garage rock songwriting — if not arranging.
