She may have a diva reputation, but for a while there in the 60s and 70s she was putting out some of the best pop music ever. What a voice. Critic Robert Christgau described it as “pop velvet with a gospel nap,” which is as good a description as any. No pop music collection is complete without a greatest hits collection from Dionne (though you can certainly skip Dion, Celine) (but not Dion DiMucci!).

  2. And she had that easy grace that so many had then, but so few now. She had it by the truckload.

Let’s not forget Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

One of the hardest things in the world is to create a catchy tune and smart lyrics that still sound catchy, smart and fresh decades later.

Bacharach/ David may have been the best ever at this.
