  1. I don’t identify with him but I’d sure like to: Roger Federer. Classy; never sweats; off on his own planet of grace, wit and skill; lives in Switzerland (I’ve never visited but I think of myself as a citizen of the place anyway) … And he doesn’t do a lot of fist-pumping after a tough point, or grunt when he hits the ball. (V. important.) Not crazy about the way he sometimes collapses onto the court after winning a tough match, but I should be more forgiving than I am.

In my mind, I’m Roger Federer. In actual fact, something considerably different and less. Does that count?

      • I identify with Fed’s identity and battle: his drama is less about whether he can beat his opponent and win the match, and more about whether he can connect with (and release) the God Mode that he has within him.

Without question, Seafood Preparation is a sport, its practitioners athletes. Luckily, I have multiple personalities — one of them is an oyster shucker at Bofinger in Paris, the other is Eric Ripert of Le Bernardin. Eric needs me to be his athletic double, because when there are so many TV, filming and book promotion events, it’s hard to make sure that the uni cream is ready in time for first dinner seating. Truly, in the lobster shelling, drizzle with a lovely dill sauce event, I have done the equivalent of earning 5 gold medals.

Recently, a fella named Frankie Edgar, former lightweight UFC champ. He’s a tri-state area Italian guy, like me, undersized, scrappy, with a real yeoman’s approach to training and work ethic. He’s hard not to root for.

Side note: The rise of MMA has been an interesting one, as it’s the first sport to come of age, on a global stage, in the internet and social media era.

A trio of facts make it a lot easier for me to get excited about and relate to these athletes as opposed to others.

    1) Comparatively, they’re not very well paid. Most pro fighters don’t make a lot of money and have incredible training expenses. It’s easy to support them when you know they’re not worth 200 million clams. And because they know they need additional revenue from sponsors they:

    2) Spar with one another and fans regularly on Twitter and FB. It’s a pretty entertaining dynamic. Additionally, they post a lot of candid interviews and training videos. There’s still something grassroots about the whole thing.

    3) Most fighters, even the champs, train in gyms that are open to the public, so it’s not uncommon for a newb to be sharing mat space, or at least gym space with world ranked contenders, which is kind of a thrill. Doesn’t really happen in other pro sports.

Enzo, sharing mat space is what all our politicians should be doing this election. I wish more of our politicians identified with UFC. Maybe they would take their egos to the mats and not to war.
