  1. I AM my hobbies. My hobbies ARE me. Actually “interests” would be a better word than hobby for the way I go thru life, but what the heck.

Hard to know quite how to peg down what a “hobby” is sometimes … Any interest and pursuit that isn’t a paying (or at least majorly-paying) one? Is making/not-making money the main criterion? But I know tons of serious and excellent creative people whose main income doesn’t come from their art-work. Does that mean that their art-creating is a mere hobby? That seems unfair, and ungallant.

So maybe it’s worth distinguishing between passing interests, hobbies, abiding hobbies, serious hobbies, serious interests, jobs, careers and vocations? What gradations am I missing in there?

What PR said…but slipping by that, music has been my main hobby, since I learned drums at age 11. I was never cut out for a career in the arts, I’m not a salesman for myself. Something I didn’t realize for some time. But to me it’s very important indeed, more important than my job (in a personal sense) – that I do to support my family. Otherwise I’d be the slacker with a shitty job and a room full of music stuff I was before kids. I also like gardening, which is similar, because you watch things grow and are never sure what they’ll become.
