Girls today try to sound bold and edgy through bowdlerizing, neo-Victorian slang. They go all OCD if they hear or read the word “pussy,” let alone “panties.” Got to scrub the language clean. So first “pussy” became “vagina,” but that wasn’t enough, so it had to be reduced to “vag” or the even more childish “vajayjay” (as though men began referring to their “pee-pee”).

“Vajayjay” is a rare example of a slang term whose origin is clearly known. It was first used several years ago on a TV medical show (I think Gray’s Anatomy, but I’m not sure), and quickly spread to talk shows such as Oprah. While the FCC doesn’t flatly ban the use of “vagina” on TV, so long as it’s used in a strictly medical context, it prefers that it not be used.

Well, we’ve certainly succeeded in disinhibiting our young women, no question about that. Has it been worth the effort?

I’d pass on hanging out with either the Mother-Daughter Douche Team OR Awkwafina, thanks.
