No Farms No Food

Sir Barken Hyena writes:

That’s a bumper sticker I saw on a truck today. It was the only one on it, with simple bold letters, so clearly it’s a statement the owner thinks important.

The genre of smug bumper stickers is thickly populated with examples, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen one that left me completely puzzled.

Just what the hell does this mean?

Is it from the food industry, as a reminder? Or is it an anti-sprawl thing? Or an old style left wing small farmer booster campaign? Or what?

Theories? I mean beyond “you’re dumber than a hyena Sir Barken”, please.

It’s farmer boosterism; I’ve seen it on billboards, too.

As if we wouldn’t quickly rediscover hunting and gathering, or rely more on fishing, etc.

    Stupid damn sloganeering.

I would guess that it was originated by some exasperated small-time farmer.

The interesting question is – have the plutocrats co-opted it? I would guess – yes.

The plutocrats will wave the dispossessed family farmers around like a bloody shirt – and then Monsanto will collect handouts from some government-sponsored “help the farmer” program.

I think you nailed it. It could have originated among some farm related groups like the PCA (farm banks) or some publisher of ag related materials. They have always been noted for promoting this heroic image of the small farmer as a means of plucking up the self-esteem of their clientele (and thereby gaining credibility with said clientele). Keep in mind that a “small” farmer today is someone who has between 1000 and 2000 acres under tillage.

It is an American Farmland Trust campaign slogan. See http://www.farmland.org/actioncenter/no-farms-no-food/local-food.asp

They say: “Ninety-one percent of America’s fruit and seventy-eight percent of our vegetables are grown near metro regions, where they are in the path of development. And America has been losing more than an acre of farmland every minute. That’s why supporting local food and farms is more important than ever!”
