High Tide of the European Welfare State

epiminondas writes:

It seems that Holland is slowly transforming its welfare state.  For some years we’ve been hearing that demographic changes in Europe were rendering the current social models untenable.  The Dutch are now addressing this instability with a reform model that takes a very slow, but steady approach.

In this regard, Charles Krauthammer’s appearance on Jon Stewart was interesting. The crack-up on the right is now so far advanced that folks like Charles now see it is fruitless to hold to that old rule about Republicans not criticizing one another. And so he take a different tack: to acknowledge the benefits of the welfare society but to argue that it has now, for once and for all, reached its limit. So he opts to take on liberalism not from a utopian (from the right) perspective but from a practical one. Jon Stewart even acknowledges that would be a discussion worth having. Alas, it is only happening in a few places, like Stewart’s show.

  2. Great link, tks. “Societal challenges are not difficult to find in the Netherlands, at least not if we look at the difficulty to integrate foreign-born individuals and those with low skills. These problems are shared with other European welfare models, not least the Scandinavian ones.” Sez a lot.
