About Atypical Neurotic

An Illinois-born refugee from academia who in late middle-age finds himself a civil servant in Norway. An unashamed city-dweller, he walks 30 minutes every day to a job where he is not paid to be an economist (lawyer or accountant), only to sound like one.

  1. That’s pretty darned colorful. That’s also pretty dark for 8:30 a.m. How do you do with light deprivation? Does it bug you or affect your moods? Spending the winter in SoCal definitely makes my winter mood a lot better than it’d otherwise be.

I’m usually so busy at this time of year that I don’t really notice. The Yuletide decorations, including Advent wreaths with lit candles, really make the season bright. To keep my vitamin D up, I spend 15-20 minutes in a tanning bed once a week, which surely helps (I started to get psoriasis after my first full winter after my first full summer here – evolution did not foresee that I would be living at 60 degrees north). That said, I am looking forward to New Year’s in Rome, which is at the same latitude as Chicago.

On the solstice, sunrise is at 9:20 am, sunset at 3:12 pm, and the sun is just under 7 degrees above the horizon at solar noon.
