So is the point how warm it is or how cold it is? And that is indeed a very 1984-ish building.

Well, it’s actually seasonal for mid-April. There was no point, other than the fact that I’ve always liked that opening line and have been waiting for a chance to use it. And while Oslo City Hall may not be to everyone’s taste, for a modernist building it is by no means cheaply built and has a surprising richness of detail, if you look closely. But then as a University of Illinois alum, I am partial to red brick.

Heading to Oslo this summer. Can you recommend some must do’s and restaurants? Plan on the following…Viking ship museum, Kon-Tiki museum, Opera house, Vigelandsparken, Comfort Hotel Grand Central, Heddal Stave Church…

If you are going to museums, you will save a lot of money if you have an Oslo Pass, because not only will you have free admission to all the museums you mention (see the list at http://www.visitoslo.com), but you will be able to ride all public transport in zones 1 and 2 (the city proper, and adjacent suburbs). Eating out is expensive, like everything else, so be warned. My favorite restaurant is Lorry (http://www.lorry.no) on Hegdehaugveien and Parkveien, almost kitty-corner from the palace grounds. Great food (their chocolate mousse cake is the best dessert in town) in a traditional atmosphere and not that expensive. Kafé Celsius is another nice and not too expensive eatery (http://www.kafecelsius.no – Oslo Pass discount). Both Lorry and Celsius have outdoor tables in summer. You will need reservations at both places, for dinner at least, since they are always full. Another place I like is Grefsenkollen (http://www.grefsenkollen.no), a better view than Holmenkollen (I think). I have never eaten there, however, so I cannot vouch for the kitchen.
