Wandering around the streets of NYC often leaves me marveling at the variety of what’s available for purchase. Just yesterday I enjoyed a visit to Sakaya, a store in the East Village that sells nothing but sake.
Couldn’t resist the siren call and treated myself to a high-end bottle of unfiltered sake. It was delicious: far more complex (in texture as well as flavor) than what I usually wind up drinking at sushi joints.
Not even the Japanese drink the stuff anymore. That should tell you how good it is.

It’s a rare sight when somebody asks for sake in a sushi joint or any normal restaurant really.

Do you know “The Meadow,” a shop on Hudson Street near Charles that sells different kinds of salt, chocolate bars and bitters? I bought cardamom bitters from them a few months ago, and need to spike my coffee with it ever since. After we went there, my friend and I told each other, “I can’t wait until we tell our friend H. who lives in Portland, OR about this store. She’ll be so jealous!” Then I go on the website, and of course, the first branch of the store is in Portland.

No, I didn’t know about The Meadow. Sounds like it offers some nice things, I’ll be sure to check it out. Amazing what’s available in NYC generally … but the Village is especially rich in strange and wonderful things to buy. Nice that the non-big-cities are coming up in the world too where exotic food and goodies go.
